711

– Say Yes Often and Occasionally Plan Ahead – Here is how to do it.

The following quote is from the first verse of “711” (written and performed by me):

“Before you answer, know what they’re asking you.”

These lyrics helped me get through the peaks and valleys of life, and I like sharing my experiences with others who are interested or looking for inspiration. From the workplace to Thanksgiving dinners, I’ve noticed how important it is to ask good questions and how some answers are given but unspoken. I’ve also noticed how some conversations are over before they’ve even started and this has saved me time.

Post graduation, I’m constantly reminded of how the real world is not the classroom. There is no teacher to monitor behavior and progress, and there is lots of over talking. If you’re looking for rules to follow, you’ll find that none really exist and that the world is yours. A shared space yes, but one that is truly shaped by each and everyone of us who are born into this world as individuals first.

The quote above from “711” can be interpreted in several ways, but one of the first words that come to my mind is “awareness.” ‘Carefulness’ can come off as pessimistic, so I typically remind myself to be ‘mindful’ throughout the day with a neutral mindset instead.

If it looks like I’m over thinking, I probably am, and I am fine with that. It’s part of who I am and it has led to the creation of over 30+ songs written and performed by me. When I freestyle lyrics, I have to overthink. When I cross the street, I have to overthink. When the engineer sends me a revised version of a demo, I have to replay it and overthink 100 times. How does the song make me feel? What changes does the song need to stand out more? Where can I hear this song being played the most?

“Before you answer, know what they’re asking you,” is a simple way of navigating what can be a complex part of our everyday lives: sharing with others. Be mindful and aware of the “How are you doing?” warriors, the out of sight, out of mind individuals, and instead make groups formed by people who share similar goals.

Check in with people because you care, not because it’s what you see people do out of boredom. Check in with people who you want to support and make memories with, and if you’re unsure, have faith and explore. Want to hear more on this topic?
